Chapter Fifteen

“We have to get out of bed at some point, Duncan,” Claire groaned in that deep, throaty voice that Duncan had come to love over the last twenty-four hours. It meant he was doing something right.

“Why?” he murmured, then placed another kiss on the back of her silky neck.

The two had finally slept a few hours around dawn. Then Duncan had woken up to the sight of honey next to him, and he couldn’t help but coax her into waking up so that he could take her again. The morning had drifted into the afternoon, which had turned into early evening, but they hadn’t left Claire’s house. In fact, they hadn’t left Claire’s bedroom, besides to answer nature calls and to take a shower that gave Duncan an opportunity to examine her body up close and personal while he washed her. But then she had wanted the same opportunity, and they had made love in the shower. Since Duncan’s supply hadn’t lasted, her dust-covered box of condoms did not have a speck of dust on it anymore and was damn near empty.

At some point, Claire had gone to the kitchen and come back with delicious-smelling coffee, and cereal and milk. The proud smile on her face had made Duncan take her again, without touching the cereal and milk. It was now almost eight o’clock at night, and the two were still tangled in each other and the sheets, too weak to move. Or, at least, Duncan thought he couldn’t move until Claire, who had been lying on her stomach poring over a Chinese take-out menu, had looked over her shoulder and smiled at him while he had told her a story about one of his nieces. And Duncan had of course gotten hard—because her smiles did that to him—and now he was lying on top of her, nibbling on her neck like she was dessert.

Duncan had stopped marveling over the insanity of his insatiability for Claire. He had stopped marveling over the dread he felt every time he thought about leaving her. He had even forgotten his damn three-step plan. What was it again anyway? Encourage. Persuade. And attack. He had never felt this way about another woman. He had never lain in bed all damn day and half the night with another woman. Duncan had stopped thinking about all of that around six o’clock that morning and had just accepted it. This was how things were with Claire. And now Duncan finally understood why his brothers didn’t find the idea of mortgages and minivans as claustrophobic as Duncan did. Because as long as Claire was thrown into the mix, the rest didn’t seem so bad.

She laughed, then turned over, pushing him off her. Duncan frowned, then leaned in for a kiss. She met his mouth with an eager tongue. She always met him with the same eagerness and passion that he felt. Whether he wanted to go slow or fast, she was right there with him, perfectly in sync.
